Chemistry
Curriculum Overview
Intent: why do we teach what we teach?
Chemistry is everywhere in the world around us. Gaining an understanding of chemistry provides a central plank to understanding the world and the universe beyond.
Our curriculum will allow students to:
- develop skills in problem solving and analysis
- develop a lifelong appreciation for the sciences
- be able to explain how the world works around them.
- give them an excellent foundation for scientific careers.
Implementation: how do we teach what we teach?
Chemistry lessons are delivered by passionate, knowledgeable, highly skilled teachers. Students are nurtured to develop their specialist knowledge, understanding and skills. Developmental opportunities for literacy and numeracy are embedded within the curriculum. Practical chemistry is placed at the heart of the curriculum, allowing students to develop strong practical skills. The learning of students is supported by high quality resources, regular assessment (both formative and summative), and teacher feedback.
Impact: how do we know what pupils have learnt and how well they have learnt it?
Pupil attainment and progress is gauged by a variety of assessment techniques. These include formative assessment opportunities in each lesson, and low stakes end of unit mastery tests, which allow both students and teachers to monitor attainment and progress, react to feedback, and make further progress. We use more formal testing at strategic points in the year. The results of public examinations are of course another key indicator.
